Swimmer of the Month: June 2017

Happy Summer Blue Wave!!! It's a new season of the Blue Wave Swimmer of the Month! This is where the coaches get the chance to honor a couple of swimmers who go above and beyond every day, not only with their swimming, but also with the attitude on deck, the positivity they bring to practice, and their overall embracement of the ideals we as a team have set before our athletes. These swimmers are coachable, hard working, and great role models for their peers. So without further ado, let's meet them!

For the month of June, 2017, we have selected Valarie Chenault (GREEN Tide), and Lea Sapatka (GREEN Crest 2).

Name and Age: Valarie Chenault, 16 years old
Valarie Chenault

Favorite swim meet, and why: "The travel meet is always my favorite because I get to hang out with all my friends, and swim hard to get best times."

Favorite event to swim and why: "100 fly, ever since I was little I like d fly, mostly because no one else did and you know little kids and their want to be different. I also thought it was a good challenge and it has been something I am good at since the coaches made me swim it so much. At almost every meet I swam it until I hurt my back and I really miss doing it."

How do you get ready for a swim meet: "I eat something that will fill me up and give me energy, I stretch and loosen up my muscles and I drink lots of water to stay hydrated."

Most challenging part about being a swimmer: "Waking up at 5am in the summer while all your other non-swimmer friends get to sleep in."

Some things you like about being on BLUE WAVE: "Blue Wave is like on big family; we support and help each other through hard sets or bad times. Blue Wave has also given me some of my best memories and friends that will last far longer than swimming."

One of your goals for this year and how you think you will achieve that goal: "One of my goals is to be able to do a 100 fly by the end of short course season. I hurt my bak a while ago, and couldn't do fly or breast, so now I'm working on getting my endurance up for those strokes."

Something your teammates on BLUE WAVE might not know about you:  "I am a Girl Scout Senior and going for my Gold Award."

Favorite food, or favorite place to eat: "I have many favorites, but my most favorite (if that's a thing) is Olive Garden; their raviolis are amazing."

Favorite movie: "That's a tough one, I have seen many but nothing can top Wonder Woman."

Some activities/hobbies you like to do when you are not swimming: "I love to read and watch Netflix like any normal teenager."

Any accomplishments you are most proud of outside of swimming:  "I got straight A's this year for the second year in a row."

If you were an animal, what would you be and why: "I would be an arctic fox because they are smart, cute, and adaptable to almost any situation."

If you could have one super-power, what would it be and why: "I would want to have the ability to shapeshift because then I could be anything I wanted, including a superhero with other powers."

Name and Age: "My name is Lea, and I'm 13 years old."
Lea Sapatka

Favorite swim meet, and why: "I would choose swimming a long course meet over a short course one any time."

Favorite event to swim and why: "My absolute favorite event to swim is the 100 IM, jsut because you get to swim all the strokes. So, during fly and free you have to sprint your heart out, but then in breast and back you get a short break."

How do you get ready for a swim meet: "Well, first I think about what I want to accomplish in this meet. Is it a best time? Is it swimming good technique under pressure? And then I do that."

Most challenging part about being a swimmer: "Getting up for early morning practices."

Some things you like about being on BLUE WAVE: "I love how everyone is always supportive, when, for example, you have to get a certain time, and your teammates will start cheering you on, and you end up getting a best time."

One of your goals for this year and how you think you will achieve that goal: "Improve my breathing patterns in butterfly, by breathing consistently anytime we swim butterfly."

Something your teammates on BLUE WAVE might not know about you: "I have a HUGE sweet tooth. I love chocolates, ice cream peanut butter, etc."

Favorite food, or favorite place to eat: "I really don't have a favorite food, because I love 'em all!"

Favorite movie: "Pirates of the Caribbean (Go Jack Sparrow!!)"

Some activities/hobbies you like to do when you are not swimming: "I play the clarinet, and piano. And I've probably also read almost every single YA book I can find."

Any accomplishments you are most proud of outside of swimming: "This school yar I got the Department Award for Latin."

If you were an animal, what would you be and why: "I would be a cat, because they are excellent climbers and jumpers, and I'd get to lay around all day and sleep."

If you could have one super-power, what would it be and why: "Flying. I would love to see how the world looks from a bird's eye view."

Thank you so much to our Swimmers of the Month Valarie and Lea for taking the time to let us know a bit about them, and for all the effort you put into practice every day!
